Thanks for providing this brilliant info. This has saved me so much time not having to try and work it all out by just going through and pressing all the buttons to see what happens like I usually do !!

A-M

Re: Success Stories

Hi Owen,

What a day your training was! I came into the room a website novice (not even that I have only ever surfed sites and received astronomical quotes to have one built for my business) and have just left the room feeling so excited about what I learned and even more what I literally created just today....in one day, for my website and for my content manager system.

I enrolled in the training knowing I would gain value and learn a lot but never thought I would walk out feeling competent and web savvy. You have taken the previously scarey and confusing IT/website and social media world and turned it into a cool thing that is going to be heaps of fun for me........and you have saved me at least $15000 in getting a site started, managed and changed as my business grows and evolves.

I recommend your training to every business owner, big or small, in fact I recommend your training to everyone who is either interested in or wants an internet presence. Today was worth every cent PLUS more that I invested in the training.

thankyou Owen

Catie
Director, Catie Kirke and Associates

Re: How to Obtain a Customer Relationship Management System

Good evening Owen,

Thank you. very interesting
Peter Adams

Re: How to Create a Landing Page

OMG O you have just made me feel so much better with that simple explanation of Landing pages, thank you pages and smart forms.......wonderful!

Thanks

Anthony Johnson

Re: How to Create a Message

Excellent Owen. You really do have a gift for explaining these steps simply. I've looked at other similar Dvd's and they usually go too fast and assume a lot of knowledge that most people like me do not have ....yet.

Re: How to Create a Thank You Page

Gidday Owen, Your easy to understand step by step process both on this website and at the Mastermind training has been fantastic. I've previously been involved in a site based on Drupal. It has lots of powerful features, including quite a few that WordPress lacks, but it is certainly not as easy to change the look and feel. Also, WordPress has a lot of professionally designed themes at very reasonable prices. In my view, they are head and shoulders above similarly priced themes for other content management systems such as Drupal or Joomla.

I learnt two important lessons about WordPress early on. The first is that if you can find a friendly (i.e. free) IT person to set up a WordPress virtual machine on your own computer it is worth testing things there before you make changes to your operational site. Of course, this applies to any system, not just WordPress but I've found that so many problems can be avoided if you can safely try things without affecting your production site. Some hosts allow you to have a second instance of WordPress and this is an alternative to running a local virtual machine for testing.

The second is to always (and I mean always) disable your plugins before updating WordPress. This applies even if you are just experimenting. There is nothing more frustrating than to find that you site has broken and you need to go all the way back to the beginning. While there are ways to back up the various bits of WordPress, a broken site is still a royal pain to fix, especially if you have clients trying to look at your pages. I have found that the easiest way to kill a WordPress site is to run an update without disabling plugins.

Regards

Celia

Re: How to Get Online Quickly and Easily

Hi Owen - Kerrie here, having a great time getting set up. Created an opt-in form, landing page, bought 11 domain names for 2 years, although not hosted them yet., now to work on the copy!
Thanks so much for the resources - they're amazing.
Kerrie.

Re: How to Obtain a Customer Relationship Management System

From Celia Taylor (one of your new Mastermind students)

http://www.tayloredresults....

Owen

I know that this is jumping ahead a bit (I've liked your sessions so much that I've 'read ahead') but other students may be interested to know that Send Pepper has a Wordpress plugin so you can more tightly integrate your mailing list management with your web site. I don't use it so I can't comment on how good it is.

I use MailChimp (a Send Pepper alternative) that people may like to look into at www.mailchimp.com. It has a free version that handles quite big loads (up to 1,000 subscribers and 6,000 emails per month). It also has a very nice Wordpress plugin that, among other things, allows you to integrate registrations on your site with your mailing lists. It also provides great statistics.

As you'd expect, MailChimp takes a different approach to Send Pepper and uses a slightly different terminology. However, from what I can see they get to much the same end point. I mention MailChimp not because I think it is better than Send Pepper but rather because it is another option that students might consider. I looked at a lot of alternatives, many of which are an absolute nightmare to use or are full of hidden charges. MailChimp meets my objectives quite well but it may not suit other people.

Once again, thanks for your great sessions.

Celia

Re: How to Acquire Web Hosting

From Celia Taylor (one of your new Mastermind students)

http://www.tayloredresults....

Owen

I'm really enjoying your sessions even though I have the advantage of a tame information management person :)

I set up my website before staring Mastermind. However, I can say to the other students that you don't stop learning what works best once you are up and running. In fact, the opposite is true.

When I sat down with my helper before we set up my website, he made a few points that I think other students might find valuable. They sound a bit technical (at least they did to me) but when he explained them they made a lot of sense.

His said that you needed to think a bit into the future, especially about whether you saw your website having a lot of content or extra capabilities. He made the point that it was always easier to expand on your current host than to move your site to another provider.

He suggested looking at the FAQs and other pages that describe the technical details of what is being offered to check whether the host :

 • provides the latest versions of the underlying software needed to run the website – look for MySQLversion 5 and PHP version 5 (but don't worry about what they mean, just think that having them is a good thing);
• allows you to run more than one database – so if you have extra software installed it keeps things separate in case something goes astray (again, don't worry about how or why you would do this, just that it is worth having for the future); and
• provides full access (i.e. bypassing nice web interfaces such as the one demonstrated in the How to Install Wordpress video in Step 6) so you are ready if you get to the point that you use an IT person to help you add new capabilities – look for words like root access and SSH.

He also suggested a little bit of research on the real-world experience of other users of the host, especially up-time (how many times does the host become unavailable), performance (such as how quickly does it assemble your pages and send them to the person using your website), and support if you have a problem. Google is your friend here but he suggested that www.whirlpool.net.au is a good place to start (just scroll down to where it says Web Hosting on the right hand side).

Again, many thanks for your great sessions.

Celia

Re: How to Get Online Quickly and Easily

Hi Jodi,
Yes the process of creating a thank you page and a landing page are essentially the same, it is just the content on the pages that are different. So the guide is appropriate for both activities.
Great to hear you are enjoying using the material.
Owen

Re: How to Get Online Quickly and Easily

Owen

Great material - thank you.

Quick question: is the "Create thank you page" guide and "Create landing page" guide meant to be the same guide? or am I going crazy??

Cheers
Jodi

Re: How to Obtain a Customer Relationship Management System

Hi Owen

Jodi here.
